SMCHS Senior Receives Two Honors in One Week

Eagle Football - Senior offensive lineman, Tom Chiarello, recently received awards from two prominent Orange County organizations for his successes in the classroom and on the gridiron.

It was a pretty good week for senior Tom Chiarello. On March 1, he received a Scholar Athlete Award from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Orange County Chapter. In order to be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must have a scholastic GPA of at least 3.5 and be recognized by his league as a First Team All-League Member for his successes on the field. Tom achieved both of these marks. He maintains a 4.14 GPA and was named First Team All- Trinity League Offensive Lineman.

The First Friday Friars Club, an organization of Catholic business men in Orange County, on March 5, named Chiarello the 2010 recipient of the Zug Cup Award at their Annual Sports Day Luncheon.

Each of the four football-playing Catholic high schools in the county nominates a senior football player for the award. In addition to a certificate each of the four finalists received a scholarship.

“I am very pleased that the First Friday Friars organization has honored Tom as the 2010 Zug Cup recipient. He is an outstanding and caring young man on the field and in the classroom. His selection has brought honor upon himself and SMCHS. It is also significant to note that this is only the second time in the twenty year history of the Zug Cup that the same school has won the award in back to back years. Last year SM student Jamie Azdair was the recipient. This is an additional honor for Santa Margarita,” said Principal Ray Dunne.

The award was named for Robert “ZUG” Zastrow, a member of the club who passed away in 1989. Zastrow played football for the Naval Academy in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s and served our country as a Naval Aviator until 1972. The award epitomizes what Mr. Zastrow so strongly supported: a belief in God, love of family, civic duty and of course, football.

Tom  is headed to the University of Texas where he will concentrate on his studies.
He joins five other Eagles who have won the award since it was instituted in 1991: Ron Mehrens (1991); Ryan Korinke (1995); Ryan Sim (1997); Thomas Hull (2006) and Jamie Azdair (2009).

Congratulations Tom!
