SM Students Help Make Prom Dreams Come True
SM students donated 65 party dresses, bags, shoes and other accessories to Working Wardrobes, a nonprofit agency that provides prom dresses to low-income girls through its Cinderellas for Life event.
Since the Working Wardrobes Club at Santa Margarita Catholic High School began five years ago, SM students have donated more than 565 dresses, accessories and shoes to support Working Wardrobe’s annual event. Cinderallas for Life provides low-income teens the opportunity to shop for the perfect prom ensemble at no cost. The teens also attend goal-setting and self-esteem seminars.
“It is so fun to help dress teens who wouldn’t otherwise get to go to the mall and buy a dress,” said senior Emily Haines, co-president of the club. “They don’t have the resources that many of us our blessed with.”
Emily and her older sisters, SM grads, Molly ’07 and Meghan ’08, along with Perry VanBoom ’07, began the SM prom dress drive.
This year’s Working Wardrobes event, on March 6, provided 500 high school seniors from the Garden Grove Unified School District, who were either from low-income or foster families, with prom dresses.
“All girls deserve to have a good prom night,” said senior Megan Murphy, co-president of SM’s Working Wardrobes club.
Working Wardrobes helps men and women in crises reenter the workforce through wardrobing and career development.
