The athletic program at Santa Margarita Catholic High School seeks to provide an experience of Christian competition that will enable students to develop athletic skills and personal qualities. We believe that through athletics, students have the opportunity to learn the values of good sportsmanship, self discipline, loyalty, leadership, and friendship.
At SMCHS, academics and athletics go hand in hand. A student must carry a 2.0 grade point average in order to participate on an athletic team. As part of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), our boys and girls sport teams are members of the Trinity League. Students of all grade levels are eligible to compete.
SMCHS teams have won 60 CIF championships, 81 individual or relay CIF Championships, 193 league championships and 5 state championships. 48 SMCHS athletes have earned the title of CIF Player of the Year. The boy’s athletic program was won the CIF Southern Section Commissioners Cup three times (1995-1996, 1996-1997, 1997-1998) and the girls have won it five times (1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2002-2003, 2013-2014 and 2015-2016). Winners of the Commissioner’s Cup are determined by a point system that provides 5 points for a CIF Divisional Championship, 3 points for a runner-up finish, 2 points for advancing to the semifinal round or a third place team finish and one point for a fourth place finish.
Since SMCHS opened, the Eagles have competed in the Olympic League (1988-1990), Angelus League (1990-1992), Sea View League (1992-1999), Serra League (1999-2006), and the Trinity League (2005-Present).
