Welcome to the home of Lady Eagles Softball. Our history is rich in tradition with league titles, CIF appearances and All League selections. Our program is comprised of special young women that take pride in wearing our school colors and representing our Catholic -Christian philosophy in the spirit of athletic competition. The mission of our softball program is to train and prepare each athlete to establish a set of goals, and work as a team to achieve each objective, both on the field and in the classroom.

John Fitzpatrick- Varsity Head Coach

Coach Fitzpatrick returns for his nineteenth season as the Varsity Head Coach of Santa Margarita Catholic High School and his 21st year coaching softball at the high school. John has an overall record of 274 wins and 174 wins losses, including sixteen trips to the CIF playoffs during his tenure as the head coach. In 2010 the Lady Eagles reached the pinnacle of high school softball in southern California by winning the Division 1 CIF Championship. Coach Fitzpatrick also led the Lady Eagles to league titles in 2007 and 2019. John has worked as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 where the Lady Eagles made three consecutive CIF playoff appearances. In 2022 Coach Fitzpatrick worked as an assistant at Golden West College. He has also coached on the travel circuit for twenty years with a variety of prominent softball clubs.

Coach Fitzpatrick received his bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University and acquired a master’s degree in public policy from Cal State Long Beach. He and his wife Therese have two children, Alycia ('01) and Mike ('04.) His favorite quote is "Anything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Krysten Fisher- Varsity Associate Head Coach

Coach Krysten has been around the game of softball for 29 years as a player and as a coach. She was born and raised in Rancho Santa Margarita, playing in the RSM Bobby Sox league before it became RTGSA and playing at Trabuco Hills High School. During high school she played for one of the most notable travel organizations, So Cal Athletics. While playing on the So Cal A’s she was recruited and ultimately earned a scholarship and played 4 years of Division I collegiate softball at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. While at Cal Poly SLO she was part of 2 Big West Conference Championship teams and earned Big West Freshman Player of the year and All Big West Conference accolades all 4 years. After graduating from Cal Poly, Krysten returned to RSM and found herself on the Santa Margarita Softball staff for 3 seasons in the capacity of Varsity assistant coach for 2 seasons and JV Head Coach for 1 season. She went on to coach 2 seasons as JSerra’s Head Varsity coach but took some time off to raise her 2 girls. She is returning to Santa Margarita for her 7^th high school season as the Associate Head Coach. Coach Krysten Fisher resides in Rancho Santa Margarita with her husband Cody and their 2 daughters.

Kayla Kmett- Varsity Assistant Coach (Pitching)

Coach Kayla will be in her 2^nd season at SMCHS as the Varsity assistant coach focusing on pitching. She comes to Santa Margarita with a wealth of knowledge having played competitively both at the high school and college levels. Coach Kayla attended JSerra high school where she was a 4-year varsity letter winner, earning 1^st Team All Trinity League in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Additionally, she was named JSerra’s Player of the year in 2016 and Offensive Player in 2017. Collegiately, Coach Kayla graduated from St. John’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Television and Film Production and played softball all 4 years. She earned All-Academic Team Honors in the 2019-2021 seasons, was part of the 2019 Big East Championship Team, and was the 2021 Team Pitching Captain her Senior season. Coach Kayla currently coaches with the USA Athletics Travel Organization.

Derek McGregor- JV Head Coach

Coach Derek has twenty-one years of experience in coaching sports; seven of those years have been with the Santa Margarita Catholic High School JV and Varsity softball program. Of those seven years, five of them have been as the JV Head Coach.  In addition, Coach Derek has also been coaching the Freshman basketball team for three years. Coach Derek’s coaching philosophy entails creating a positive environment and the promotion of team first. These two principals along with hard work, preparation, and structure outline the core principals of his approach to coaching.

Coach Derek has watched his three children play sports at SMCHS; two of which have graduated from Texas Christian University and his third is currently attending Oklahoma State. He also hosted an exchange student who played basketball for two years at Santa Margarita, four years at Cal State Fullerton and is now currently playing professionally in China. He has been married for the past thirty years to his wife Debbie. Coach Derek has owned and operated an engineering and surveying firm for the past thirty-five years. Along with coaching, Derek also gives back to his community by sitting on public and private boards and teaching after school programs.

Frank Rizzo- JV Assistant Coach

Frank has been involved in fast pitch softball for 45 years. Started as a player at the age of 16. Was involved in San Clemente fast pitch league for over 20 years in San Clemente. Frank was a fastpitch pitcher for 18 years and has also been a player for 28 years. Frank started his coaching career at San Clemente high school and move forward to be the Head Coach at Concordia University for 10 years. Frank was Head Coach JSerra high school and assistance coach at Saddleback College. Frank had a softball training facility in Lake Forest before he came to Santa Margarita High School for the last 10 years. Frank specializes in pitching and hitting training. He current trains players in our area.
