Mock Trial
The SMCHS Mock Trial team is an exciting and educational opportunity to get exposure to the legal world. Students on the team will have the chance to experience criminal trials (based on real-world trials) in the County of Orange Superior Court building in Santa Ana. The trials are presided over by real Superior Court Judges and students fill the roles of attorneys, witnesses, the bailiff and more. Students will compete against teams from other schools around Orange County in a tournament-style competition that takes place throughout November and December.
What if I don't know anything about law, trials, or the legal system?
That's okay! Our team is under the expert instruction of two real-life attorneys who serve as our attorney coaches. They spend hours with the team teaching them everything they need to know about the case and how to try that case in a courtroom setting.
Who are the attorney coaches?
We are fortunate to welcome Mr. John Kaniewski, Esq. who has decades of legal and trial experience to share with students.
How can I join Mock Trial?
There is an interest meeting held in August, each year. Attending this meeting is the first step to joining the team. At the meeting, students will learn about the requirements and commitment involved. Once the roster is established, students will attend a weekly practice with the attorney coaches until the tournament begins in November.
