IB at Santa Margarita Catholic High School
On January 6, 1997 Santa Margarita Catholic High School joined the prestigious International Baccalaureate Organization, which offers academically talented and motivated high school students an opportunity to take IB courses and to earn an internationally recognized diploma. As of September 2005, there are 1,598 IB world schools with 581 of the in North America. California has the majority of the country's IB schools (59) with Santa Margarita being one of them and also being one of the few Catholic high schools in the nation to be a member of this organization. This comprehensive two-year program is designed for juniors and seniors who take courses and sit for examinations in specified subject areas. Students who opt for the Full Diploma must take courses in all six specific areas and also complete 150 hours of creative, athletic, and social service activities, write a 4,000 word extended essay of original research and take a course entitled Theory of Knowledge, which explores the nature of values and the essence of truth in the various disciplines. Students who opt for individual IB courses (Certificate) must also sit for examinations, but do not have to complete the additional requirements of service hours, write the extended essay, or take Theory of Knowledge. Why Should a Student Choose the IB Programme? To participate in the IB Programme means participating in a challenging, broad-based curriculum, which opens a student to, issues affecting the community and the world.
