A Lasting Legacy: SMCHS Mourns the Loss of Original Benefactor

Santa Margarita Catholic High School grieves the loss of Richard Hunsaker, one of the school’s original benefactors whose lasting legacy will be forever upheld through his generous and kind virtues. A man of humility and devout Catholic, he led an abundant life infused with serving communities and helping others through time and tithe. Despite his busy schedule, Hunsaker always kept family a priority and made time to help with charitable causes within the Diocese of Orange.

After graduating from the University of Southern California in 1963, Hunsaker & Associates opened its offices in 1976. Since that time, it has consulted on over 500,000 acres of land development. Hunsaker was an active member of the community and considered a highly respected leader in the civil engineering industry and was actively involved in many charitable organizations.

He was a Knight in the Order of Malta, a prestigious Catholic organization whose members seek to glorify God through their work with the poor and sick while witnessing their faith. Hunsaker served on various boards of directors and was frequently recognized his unwavering commitment as a volunteer and community leader. He made pilgrimages to Lourdes, France, caring for the sick and completed a 430-mile pilgrimage walk across Spain during his lifetime.

Throughout the years, Hunsaker held numerous roles at SMCHS, including Alumni Parent Auxiliary, Consultative School Board and the Principal’s Council. He and his wife of 55 years, Regina Hunsaker have three children and eight grandchildren. Their son, David, graduated from SMCHS in 1992.

In December of 2004, when he retired, his company honored him by giving SMCHS a donation to create an endowment for tuition assistance in his name. The Richard Hunsaker Scholarship has provided 60 SMCHS scholarships, totaling more than $72,000 for students in need of assistance.

Hunsaker exemplified every aspect of Caritas Christi, the love of Christ. May he rest in peace. Please continue to keep the Hunsaker Family in your hearts and prayers during this difficult time.
