Girls Golf Wins Big at PGA High School National Invitational
Our girls golf team found massive success at the 2024 PGA Girls High School Golf National Invitational in Frisco, Texas this week. Our team, which includes Leigh Chien ’24, Taryn Cagle ’25, Angelina Tao ’26, Emily Song ’27, and Donina Zhou ’27, dominated with a staggering score of 55-under par 809.
Additionally, Leigh Chien ’24 earned the top spot in the individual part of the tournament, beating out her opponent in a 4-hole playoff that ended with her at 17-under 199. By winning this, Chien receives exemptions into the 2024 Junior PGA Championships at Congressional Country Club and the 2025 North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst Resort. Chien is heading to Stanford University in the fall to continue her golf career.
Coach Jill Hegna said she is “overwhelmed with pride” with her players' performance this week.
“I’m so deeply proud of our team. Each player has worked very hard during the off-season to improve their physical and mental game. This invitational tested their abilities,” Hegna said. “The players endured and never wavered.”
Hegna added that parents of golfers from other states told her how much their daughters enjoyed playing with our team. She says this is more important to her as a coach than their score. Hegna describes them as "true team players," never wanting to let each other down.
Congratulations, girls!
