IB Learner Profile Attribute of the Month: Knowledgeable

IB Learner Profile Attribute of the Month: Knowledgeable
Three IB students on what it means to build real understanding.

Being knowledgeable, in the IB sense, is not about collecting facts. It is about exploring ideas of local and global significance, developing depth of understanding across a range of disciplines, and knowing what to do with that understanding. This month, three members of the Class of 2027 describe what that has looked like for them.

Brennan Wagner '27  has found that the IB program has broadened the way he approaches problems and ideas.
“IB has taught me a wide range of ideologies and thinking styles via Philosophy and Theory of Knowledge,” he said. “IB Math and IB Design Tech stress the importance of approaching issues from multiple angles and using ideas from other cultures to solve problems.”

Catherine Miller-Jones '27 believes that being knowledgeable means staying curious and open to new perspectives.
“The IB program has taught me to view issues with curiosity and an open mind,” she said. “Through the various classes, the Extended Essay, and other unique IB requirements, I have become a more adaptable and well-rounded student, approaching challenges from a global perspective.”

Richard Mejia '27 offered the sharpest reminder of the responsibility that comes with knowledge.
“Truth can change. Facts are forever,” he said. “We have a responsibility to protect the truth so that it may never stray from the facts.”

Together, their perspectives reflect the different ways students can develop as knowledgeable learners: exploring ideas across disciplines, considering different perspectives and engaging meaningfully with the world around them.

The IB Diploma Program combines academic rigor, research skills, global awareness and personal growth. SMCHS is proud to be an IB World School and celebrate three decades of providing students with an internationally minded, academically rigorous education rooted in our charism of Caritas Christi.

Each month, we will take a look at the various attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
