John Remmell Named SMCHS Nominee for Diocesan Teacher of the Year

John Remmell Named SMCHS Nominee for Diocesan Teacher of the Year

Nominated by Santa Margarita Catholic High School faculty and staff, SMCHS is proud to announce John Remmell as the school’s nominee for the Diocesan St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Teacher of the Year Award. All nominees were recognized at the Celebrating Catholic School Educator Awards and Dinner. Fifteen employees were recognized for their years of serving in the diocese.

John has taught social studies at SMCHS for nearly 30 years and has been instrumental in building the school’s world-renowned Model United Nations (MUN) program, serving as the program’s director. Through his dedication, students develop critical thinking, embrace diverse perspectives, and engage in meaningful, respectful dialogue – skills essential for success in today’s world.

"He is fostering SM students to be Catholic world changers and leaders. Mr. Remmell truly cares for his students and takes them on as his own. He encourages them to push themselves out of their comfort zone and celebrates their growth, progress, and success," said Melissa Fosdick, College Counselor.

The MUN program equips students with lifelong tools in research, writing, public speaking, critical thinking, leadership, conflict resolution and compromise. Under John’s guidance, SMCHS students consistently earn top honors at local and international MUN conferences.

A faith-filled leader, John brings compassion and Catholic teaching into his classroom. By encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones and celebrating their achievements, he is inspiring the next generation of world changers.
