The big deal Friday night in the Southland was a much-anticipated high school gridiron clash between two highly ranked powerhouse schools — Santa Margarita Catholic and Centennial (Corona). This was the third time in a calendar year the two foes faced off. They met twice last season, with both outcomes deflating for the Huskies, including the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game. Those losses constituted their only setbacks of the year.
The matchup caught nationwide attention from every prep media outlet. Not a single one saw the Eagles as having much of a chance at taking home the win. With the storyline established, both schools took the field with the game-time temperature absolutely scorching — in excess of 100 degrees. In the end, SMCHS prevailed by the slimmest of margins, 21-20, and reshuffled the playing deck of high school football for 2026.
From the outset, SMCHS took the field and played it cool as it demonstrated poise and confidence for 48 minutes. The Eagles jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. The stout defense held down the Huskies early on while SMCHS benefited from two rushing scores, one each from Adrian Petero and Jaion Smith. The double-digit cushion didn't last long, as Centennial responded and registered a second-quarter passing touchdown to cut the margin to 14-7 by halftime.
On their first offensive series of the second half, the Huskies again put together a fruitful drive, which resulted in their second aerial touchdown of the night. The score was knotted at 14-14.
On the final play of the third quarter, Centennial tried to gain traction and escape its own territory. Quarterback Jaden Jefferson was short on a pass to one of his receivers, and Ca'ron Williams jumped the route and snagged a timely interception. The junior cornerback scampered 31 yards to the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown — the one that would be the difference.
The Huskies weren’t done. In the fourth quarter, they quickly answered back by stringing together an 86-yard drive. Braylin Drake caught a pass and found a seam to amble for an 11-yard touchdown to cut SMCHS’s lead to 21-20.
However, on the vital extra-point attempt to tie the game, the ball was deflected at the line by junior safety Jake Martin. His swat changed the trajectory just enough, and the ball ricocheted off the right upright, keeping the Eagles ahead by a single point.
Late in the contest, with under three minutes remaining, Centennial had one last opportunity to engineer a potential game-winning drive. Facing a critical fourth-and-1 near midfield, Eagles freshman Aydan Steen delivered a crucial defensive stop, bringing down Jefferson inches short of a first down.
SMCHS secured its fourth consecutive victory over the Huskies. The “Battle of the Titans” finished as expected — with the victor winning by a narrow margin. The ramifications of the SMCHS triumph will impact the poll rankings at the local, state and national levels. The two teams could meet once again in late November in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
The keys to the Eagles’ victory:
- Authority of the offensive and defensive lines to control the trenches
- Grinding running game that wore down the opposition — almost 5 yards per attempt
- Successful game-clock management
- Significant contributions by freshman and sophomore underclassmen
- Preparation and well-developed coaching schemes
Remarkably, five of Ca’ron Williams’ six career varsity interceptions have come versus Centennial, and he has returned two for touchdowns.
