National Merit Scholarship Recognitions

Three SMCHS students have been named semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Each year, over 3.5 million high school students take the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, also known as the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). Around 34,000 of these students receive a Letter of Commendation from their school and the National Merit Scholarship Program. Although Commended Students will not progress further in the competition, they place among 50,000 students who entered the competition by taking the 2020 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The remaining 16,000 exceptional students, whose scores catapult them to the 99th percentile in their state, become National Merit Semifinalists. Semifinalists have an opportunity to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth nearly $30 million. These students must complete certain requirements to advance to the Finalist competition level. Congratulations to these students on their extraordinary accomplishment.
