Congratulations to the boys’ water polo team for their thrilling CIF win over Mater Dei, 13-12

November 9, 2018

SANTA ANA, CA. – They say that the third time is a charm. That plays true in the case of the Santa Margarita boys’ water polo team this season, as they faced Mater Dei for a third time this season and prevailed, 13-12, this time in the CIF Division 1 fifth place game. The Eagles (19-9, 3-1) came in as the Trinity League’s #2 representative, with Mater Dei (19-9) coming in as the Trinity League’s #1 team.

The Eagles faced off with the Monarchs twice earlier in the season, once in the preseason at the South Coast Tournament, where the Eagles would lose 10-5. When league play came around, the Eagles tightened up the scoring, but still lost by a score of 9-6, which was played at Mater Dei. Fast forward to CIF and in fitting fashion, the two teams would cross paths for a third time.

After dropping their first round game to Loyola, 11-8, the Eagles moved to the consolation bracket where they would go on to defeat San Clemente in OT, 11-10, before securing the fifth place position Thursday night after defeating Mater Dei, 13-12.

The season doesn’t stop there for the boys, next up is the CIF Regional Championship where the Eagles will play out of the SoCal Region with those brackets being made available Sunday, November 11th in the evening. All games will be split between Ocean View and Segerstrom High School’s with round one taking place November 16th.
