TESTING
Standardized testing is one factor in college admissions decisions, especially at most of the highly selective colleges and universities. Although many institutions are now offering test-optional admissions review, a test score can often enhance a scholarship or merit award outside of an admissions decision. The theory behind requesting standardized testing is offering a common criterion to use for application evaluation.
SM Testing Overview
SM provides an annual opportunity for all students to prepare for the college testing process. Each October, 9th and 10th grades take one practice exam while at school. Tests are scored and a detailed assessment regarding predictive performance is given to each student. No outside registration or fee is required. 11th graders sit for the PSAT. Scores from this exam are entered in the National Merit Scholarship program.
- 9th Grade: PSAT 8/9
- 10th Grade: PreACT
- 11th Grade: PSAT*Qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship
The timeline for taking an official SAT or ACT varies for each student from summer before junior year to the fall of senior year. Each student works individually with their counselor to create a testing calendar based on academic preparation and readiness.
Colleges do not require both the ACT or SAT during the admissions process. Students may opt to take one or the other. Some colleges may "superscore" the SAT or the ACT, meaning they will only review the highest section scores from each test date.
