Thank you for attending Scheduling Night.

Incoming Freshman Scheduling Night will be held on March 19. This mandatory event will be held on campus and is for all registered incoming freshmen. Students will be completing their class schedules for their freshman year by selecting their theology, world language, elective, and social studies classes. In addition to creating your schedule, this is a night you can get any questions you have answered. You will have an opportunity to talk with department chairs, counselors, athletics staff, learn about summer sports camps, and shop the Eagles Nest Campus Store. You will also receive information regarding summer school, math placement testing, book sales and tablet training.

• 5:30 p.m.: Bookstore opens (Get your SM spirit wear!)
• 6:00-6:45 p.m.: Check-in and reception. Enjoy small bites and treats!
• 6:30-6:45 p.m.: For those interested in our award-winning Model United Nations program, there will be a short presentation in the Science Lecture Hall on campus. More information on MUN can be found in the elective brochure below.
• 7:00 p.m.: Formal presentation in the Moiso Family Pavilion (Gym)

All incoming students, transfer students, and international students are assigned to a school (academic/social-emotional) counselor at Scheduling Night who will provide support throughout the student's four years. During the second semester of their junior year, students acquire an additional college counselor who walks them step-by-step through the entire college application process.

When you log-in to purchase your books during the summer, you will see your student's class list. Your students finalized schedule with teacher assignments and periods will be distributed to students prior to the first day of school. TAPA Theatre Summer Conservatory course will introduce the performer to all three aspects of live theatre in the form of songs, monologues, scenes and production numbers.

July 8 – July 25, Monday through Thursday

• Freshman Prep is open to incoming freshman students who are looking to strengthen their Language Arts (English), Algebra, or Executive Function skills prior to beginning their freshman year.
• Students can take one, two or three classes. Cost is dependent on number of classes taken ($250, $450, $650).  
• Due to differences in curriculum, students who are taking English 1 H, Algebra 1 H, Algebra 2, or Algebra 2 H cannot participate in the Language Arts or Algebra Skills courses.

MUN Bootcamp:

Incoming freshmen who choose to take MUN can also get a jump start on the school year by enrolling in the optional MUN summer Bootcamp.

This summer school class is open to current SM students who have not yet completed their health graduation requirement and incoming freshmen who are 100% committed to participating in the MUN program.  If an incoming freshman takes Health and drops MUN, they will repeat the Health Seminar in the school year.

Attendance

• Attendance is MANDATORY for the first and last day of class.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  
• Health is offered in a blended/online format.

Orientation is approximately 1 hour.

Note: In-class final meeting time corresponds to orientation meeting time.

Course Description

Summer School health is offered in a blended/online format. In person attendance is MANDATORY for the first and last day of the session.  All other coursework will be completed online.

SMCHS ninth grade students will be automatically placed in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 honors. Placement into Algebra 1 honors is based on HSPT scores.

The math placement test is required for any student who has already taken a full year of Algebra 1 with a grade B or better and is looking to advance to Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 honors. Sign up for the exam will be available on March 20. Students are required to sign-up for one of the below dates.

Students who have completed Algebra 2 or higher in middle school seeking higher level placement will be placed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Math Department Chair Marty Gahan to discuss specifics.  

Students should bring their assigned computer username and password with them to the placement test. These credentials will be distributed at Freshman Scheduling Night. If you don't have your credentials with you, your test proctor will provide assistance. Students do not need to bring any other supplies with them to the exam. Calculators are not permitted. Sign-up for the Math Placement Test

This English honors placement test is only open to students who did not take their HSPT exam at SMCHS and want to test into honors. More information will be shared at Scheduling Night (March 19). There is no need to sign-up in advance, simply show up the day of the test.

Our Spanish Placement test is open to anyone who wishes to be placed in Spanish honors or a higher level of Spanish class. It will consist of two parts, a written test and an oral exam. More information will be shared at Scheduling Night. There is no need to sign-up in advance, simply show up the day of the test. Placement into honors for other world languages is based on the HSPT score. 

Placement Exams for Spanish (and higher levels in other languages*)

*Students with advanced language proficiency in a language other than Spanish may be tested for placement into higher levels. Honors placement for other languages is based on the HSPT. Please make arrangements with Department Chair Tom Gerlach in advance. 

For Mandarin Chinese 1H, French 1H, Ancient Greek 1H, Latin 1H, honors placement is based on HSPT scores.

Thank you so much for your interest in Performing Arts. Most of our entry level classes do not require an audition. Please see each discipline for details regarding auditions/placement in advanced classes. 

Instrumental Music:

• No auditions are required for students interested in Wind Ensemble or String Orchestra. 
• Auditions will be available for Wind Ensemble Honors, String Orchestra Honors, and Rock Band/Music Production.
• Additional instrumental music classes are offered after school as part of the Talon Academy of Performing Arts (TAPA)

Steel Drum/Percussion Ensemble Honors:

• Auditions for steel drum/percussion ensemble honors will be held
  April 30 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Eagle Regiment Marching Band and Color Guard:

Students interested in participating in the Eagle Regiment Marching Band and Color Guard should attend the rookie camps held in May. Please contact Mr. Ruben Puebla for more information. 

Theatre:

There are no auditions required for Theatre I, Musical Theatre, Advanced Theatre Honors or IB Theatre. Additional theatre classes are offered after school as part of the Talon Academy of Performing Arts (TAPA).

• There are three tracks:
  • Acting
  • Triple Threat Musical Theatre
  • Technical Theatre and Design

Please refer to the TAPA requirements. Auditions for the 2024-25 Talon Theatre season productions will be available on the Talon Theatre website. 

Dance Class Auditions:

• There are no auditions for incoming freshmen interested in Beginning Dance Class.
• For anyone interested in Intermediate or Advanced Dance, students may set up an audition time with Mrs. Darwazeh prior to April 25. For more information regarding auditions for intermediate-advanced dance class, please email Mrs. Darwazeh at darwazehd@smhs.org

Eagle Dance Force Song & Dance Teams:

• Tryout Information Night for the EDF Song & Dance teams is April 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the Science Lecture Hall.
• EDF song and dance team audition clinics will be held on April 23 and April 24 from 3:30.- 5:30p.m.  Applications will be posted on the song team webpage and the dance team webpage. The audition fee is $30.00. Applications and fee are due on or before April 21. 
• EDF song and dance team auditions will be held on April 25 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the Dance Room (R313) on the third floor of the Eagle Athletic Center.

Choral Auditions:  

• There are no auditions for incoming freshmen interested in Concert Choir or Men’s Choir.
• Advanced Women's and Chamber Singers Honors placement auditions for new students will be held on March 22 from 2-5 p.m. in A152 (the choir room). To sign up for an audition slot, click here. 
• Additional vocal music classes are offered after school as part of the Talon Academy of Performing Arts (TAPA)

TAPA Triple-Threat Musical Theatre Auditions:

What is SOARientation?

We are excited to share a fun schedule of events for our new students, affectionately
referred to as SOARientation. SOARientation gets you ready to start your life as an Eagle. SOARientation includes several fun and engaging activities, dynamic presentations, and small group discussions that give new students the opportunity to connect with their new classmates and learn everything they need to know about SMCHS. Not only will students make new friends and form lasting connections, but they will start school with an abundance of resources that will enable them to successfully begin the school year. 

Freshman SOARientation

Attendance is required on this date: Monday, August 12: SOARientation at SMCHS from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Attire: SM uniform including a collared shirt (formal Mass uniform is NOT required).

Welcome Class of 2028 Mass

Due to the success of our "Let's Chat" sessions with SMCHS Parent Liaison Lori Evers, we will no longer be offering Parent SOARientation. You're welcome to join your student for the Class of 2028 Mass from 1:45-2:45 p.m. This meaningful Mass marks the beginning of your student's spiritual journey at Santa Margarita.

Transfer Student SOARientation

Transfer SOARientation at SMCHS from 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.

SOARientation will include engaging activities, dynamic presentations, and small groups led by our upperclassmen Link Crew leaders. All students will receive their class schedules, get a campus tour, and take yearbook/ID photos. More information will be shared as we get closer to the event.

Freshman and sophomore students attend organized events with their religion classes to complete the necessary hours of service. Class T-Shirts

Class T-Shirt orders placed after July 20 will be available for pick up during the first week of September. SMCHS class t-shirts are now available for purchase and open to all grade levels. Shirts are $0 for ASB Card members and $30 for non-ASB Card members. You must be logged in to your ASB membership account to receive the discount. Sizes go from XS-2XL. If you are purchasing a class shirt for more than one student, you will need to submit the form online for each student. Class T-Shirts must be purchased through the online store and are not available through the campus store. Order your Class T-Shirt.
