vARSITY cOACH - Sinan Tanik

Coach Sinan Cem Tanik, after a CIF Championship in 2024 and a CIF quarterfinal run last year, is coming back into his fifth season with the Eagles. Coach Tanik demonstrates a wealth of experience and expertise across various facets of volleyball. With an illustrious professional career spanning 18 years in Europe, he has left an indelible mark on the sport. As a former captain of the Turkish National team for 11 years, Coach Tanik's leadership qualities have been honed through numerous national and international championships and accolades.
His tenure as a professional player extends beyond Turkey, as he has served as captain for teams in Poland, Greece, UAE, Spain, and Turkey, showcasing his adaptability to diverse cultures and playing conditions. Notably, he has contributed significantly to the success of Galatasaray, one of Turkey's premier sports clubs, where he held the positions of Men's Volleyball Sportive Director and Team Manager. Coach Tanik's influence extends to the international stage, having served as the Director and Manager of the Turkish Men's Senior National Team. Additionally, he has demonstrated his coaching prowess as the Head Coach of Poland Plus Liga team Effector Kielce and Pierwsze Liga team AZS Czestochowa before transitioning to the United States. In his two years at Concordia University Irvine, Coach Tanik made substantial contributions as an Assistant Coach of Men's Volleyball, progressively assuming roles as Recruiting Coordinator and eventually Interim Head Coach. Currently, he imparts his knowledge and expertise as an educator, teaching Economics, Intro to Business, and Intro to Law at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, alongside teaching Sports Psychology and Functional Movement at Stanton University as an Adjunct Professor.
In addition to his scholastic pursuits, Coach Tanik serves as the Head Coach of the Laguna Beach HS girls’ volleyball program where they won last year’s CIF Championship as well. He also coaches both boys’ and girls’ teams at the 949 Volleyball Club in San Juan Capistrano, further exemplifying his dedication to nurturing young talent. Coach Tanik's academic credentials complement his on-court achievements, with master’s degrees in coaching and exercise sciences (MSCE) and coaching and athletic administration (MCAA) from Concordia University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Anadolu University in Turkey, underscoring his commitment to holistic development. Furthermore, Coach Tanik possesses esteemed coaching certifications, including a 4th level Turkish Volleyball Federation Coaching diploma, FIVB Level 2 certification, and USAV CAP II certificates, indicative of his continuous pursuit of excellence and professional growth in the field of volleyball
VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH - MARK METRAKOS

Mark Metrakos has been coaching volleyball for the past 15 years ranging from ages 8-21 and has experience with both the Men’s and Women’s aspects of the sport. He has a State Championship while at Irvine Valley College (2011) and a National Championship while at Concordia University Irvine (2013). While at CUI, he was a two-time NAIA All-American and still holds a variety of records 12 years later. Mark also has experience with the Semi-Professional leagues NVA (National Volleyball Association) and VLA (Volleyball League of America) where he helped his team win multiple championships through the years. Mark is excited to bring his vast wealth of volleyball knowledge to SMCHS and looks forward to helping these young men grow into their full potential.
JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH - TORREY KARLSEN

Coach Torrey Karlsen is joining us for his first season as an Eagle! He brings over 10 years of coaching experience to the program. Torrey was professionally trained and mentored directly by multiple Team USA coaches. Most notably, Luka Slabe, Rob Neilsen, Chris McGown, Joaquin Acosta and Paul Baxter. Over the last 10 years, Torrey has had various positions in the volleyball world. His journey started at St. Margaret’s where he was JV Head Coach and Varsity assistant for the Highschool Boys and Girls Volleyball Programs. During his time at St. Margaret’s, he also ran their Middle school Girls and Boys Volleyball Program, where he won the Parochial Athletic Championships with the Boys and finished 3rd with the Girls.
Torrey is currently entering his 9th season with A4 Volley. He has amassed over 20 medals coaching Boys and Girls Club Volleyball. Coaching all ages and skill levels, Torrey has great understanding and knowledge on how to help players achieve their best. He has helped numerous kids reach the next level and pursue college athletics. Torrey also has a degree in Sports Psychology from National University.
FROSH-SOPH HEAD COACH - Ryan Neumann

Coach Ryan brings a strong background in athletics, leadership, and personal development to our boys' volleyball program. A lifelong athlete, he has built his coaching approach around discipline, communication, and fostering a positive team culture. His coaching experience includes working with athletes of varying ages and skill levels through both school and club volleyball environments, where he has focused on building strong fundamentals, promoting accountability, and developing confident competitors who play with purpose.
With years of experience in people-oriented roles, Coach Ryan excels at connecting with student athletes. He is intentional about learning how each player communicates, learns, and grows, allowing him to tailor his coaching to best support both individual improvement and team success. He prioritizes respect, hard work, and personal growth, believing that the lessons learned through volleyball extend well beyond the court.
Coach Ryan is currently completing his studies in Kinesiology, driven by a continued passion for athletics, mentorship, and helping young athletes reach their potential. He is committed to providing a structured, positive, and competitive environment where student-athletes can develop both skill and character, preparing them for success in sport and in life.
