Girls Water Polo Legacy

History

Santa Margarita Catholic High School has had a tradition of excellence in the sport of girls water polo since the sport became officially sanctioned by CIF in 1997. Since 1997, the Eagles of Santa Margarita have won 12 varsity league championships, three CIF Championships in 2000, 2013 and 2014, and were the runner-up three times. With the completion of the SMCHS Aquatics Center five years ago, the program looks toward a bright future in Orange County.

The program has produced 25 All-Americans selections, 25 All-Orange County selections, 59 All-CIF selections and 104 All-League selections. Additionally, an SMCHS student-athlete has been named the League Player of the Year an amazing 15 times. 52 SMCHS graduates have gone on to play water polo in college and five of those have been recognized as Collegiate All-Americans. Three graduates have competed for the USA Water Polo Women’s National Team in international competition. Seven graduates have represented SMCHS on the USA Water Polo Women’s Junior National Team and eleven have competed with the Youth National Team. Additionally, two current student-athletes have competed with the Cadet National Team.
