SM Class of 2027 – Join us for a 4-day workshop on how to tell your story through the Common Application Personal Statement and Supplemental Essays! SM College Counselors, Eva Hester and Megan Olivor and SM Essay Specialist McKenna Sulick are pairing up with College Admission Counselors to help students identify a personal statement topic and to give content feedback on their first draft so that students can walk away with edits to help finalize their common app personal statement. A sample of the itinerary is below:

Day 1: Presentations on how to write a great college essay. The presentation will include tips and ideas to get students thinking of their best stories. We will also start brainstorming activities. Students continue brainstorming as homework.

Day 2: Brainstorming day. Students continue to brainstorm and meet with a college admissions representative to help choose their topic. Students start to draft in class and finish their first draft as homework. 

Day 3: Draft review. Students bring in their first draft to get content feedback from a college admissions representative to fine tune their essay. 

Day 4: How to tell your story through other parts of the application – supplemental essays, additional information, and general tips to stand out in the admissions process.

Admission Counselors with various backgrounds at many different colleges will be present. So far we have representatives from Chapman University, George Washington University, Hampden-Sydney College, Lehigh University, Texas Christian University, University of Oklahoma, University of Oregon, University of Southern California, University of Tennessee and Worcester Polytechnic Institute confirmed to help. While these are the current schools they represent, many have worked at various institutions and have many years of admissions experience.

Learn how to write standout Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) for your UC application! This 2½-hour workshop will cover:

UC PIQs Overview: Understand the purpose of the UC PIQs and learn how they help showcase your academic/career goals, personal experiences, skills, and achievements.

Brainstorming Session: Guided exercises to help you reflect on your experiences and choose the best stories to highlight in your responses.

Draft Outlines: Develop four potential topics and outline the content for each, setting the stage for strong, focused responses.

Feedback/Review: Receive in-depth feedback on one completed PIQ draft, ensuring your response is polished and powerful.

Interactive Q&A: Throughout the two sessions, you can get advice, ask questions, and brainstorm strategies to strengthen your UC application.

By the end of the workshop, you will have one fully developed PIQ (350 words) and at least 2-3 well-crafted outlines!

Unlock your full potential with the PSAT / SAT Prep and Strategies Course. This 12-hour course is designed to help students achieve higher scores, build on their skills and knowledge for optimal speed and accuracy, and gain the confidence needed to walk into the test center feeling prepared and self-assured. This course offers interactive sessions, live instruction from your teacher that has more than 20 years of experience, proven strategies, practice tests and learning plans that will all help students be prepared for the PSAT / SAT. Students will gain the edge needed, while parents can rest assured knowing their child is receiving valuable skills, knowledge and preparation strategies.

This course is great for Freshman trying to get ahead, juniors that will be taking the SAT for the first time or trying to improve their previous score and for Sophomores interested in taking the PSAT (it will help them prepare for the Official National Merit Scholarship PSAT in October). Did you know that we live in a biodiversity hotspot? Session 1 of this field ecology exploration will examine human effects on local biodiversity and conservation methods. We will learn how ecologists quantify biodiversity and brainstorm realistic ways to reduce your impact. Session 2 will focus on land and water use and pollution, including harmful chemicals we introduce to our environment and the effects those have on our local ecosystem (and humans, alike!).

Session 1: Biodiversity and Conservation - A (mostly) outdoor course that will explore the effects of human interaction on our local biodiversity.

Session 2: Land and Water Use and Pollution - A (mostly) outdoor course that will examine pollutants introduced to our environment by humans, and how we minimize their effects.

Learn how to draw and create dynamic comic book characters in the style of the Pros. You will create character design sheets and produce a cover design to advertise your creation for a portfolio showcase. If you are interested in MUN, get a jump start on the school year by enrolling in this special MUN BOOT CAMP! The camp will be run by SMCHS MUN Director, Mr. John Remmell. He will give you his expert MUN advice on how to become an award-winning delegate. And you will get a chance to meet other students that will be future MUNers as well. This is a totally optional program intended to give our incoming freshmen the best start possible in MUN!!!

Includes laptop training; students will get SM laptops at MUN camp if available from the vendor.

Learn to surf or improve your surfing abilities in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The gentle break at Doheny State Beach is the perfect place to improve your skills. Under the direction of experienced surfers themselves, the coaches will give you the attention and instruction you need to be prepared to participate on the high school surf team. Bring your own board (we do have a couple of loaner boards if need be). Open only to SM students, class of 2027-2030. **Participants will meet at Doheny State Beach, not at SM.**

You’ll 3D print your creation every day and take it home as a trophy of your genius!  Let’s build, battle, and have a blast!

The Big Idea: You have more power to help others than you think. AI tools now give individuals the ability to research, design, communicate, and organize like never before—turning one person with a good idea into a real force for change. In this three-week project, you'll identify a problem that affects real people and use AI as your partner to develop a solution worth sharing.

The Process:

Find a Problem That Matters — Look at your school, neighborhood, parish, or the wider world. Who's struggling? What needs aren't being met? What would make someone's day easier, safer, or more dignified? You'll choose a real human problem and learn to define it clearly.

Partner with AI to Develop Solutions — Discover how AI tools (text assistants, image generators, design aids) can help you research root causes, brainstorm approaches, draft materials, and create visuals—not to replace your thinking, but to accelerate it.

Create Something You Can Share — build a proposal, prototype, awareness campaign, resource guide, or pitch that could actually help. The goal isn't perfection—it's action.

Your project could be:

• A resource kit for a local need (food insecurity, loneliness, accessibility)
• An awareness campaign for an overlooked issue
• A service idea for your school or parish community
• A tool or guide that helps a specific group of people
• A proposal you could present to someone who could act on it

Wired Differently: Making Your Brain Work for You Is a hands-on summer enrichment course designed for all high school students – no diagnosis required – who want to better understand how their unique brains learn, focus, and stay motivated.
