Class of 2027 & New Student Info

Incoming Freshman Scheduling Night will be held on March 20. This mandatory event will be held on campus and is for all registered incoming freshmen. Students will be completing their class schedules for their freshman year by selecting their theology, world language, elective, and social studies classes. In addition to creating your schedule, this is a night you can get any questions you have answered. You will have an opportunity to talk with department chairs, counselors, athletics staff, learn about summer sports camps, and shop the Eagles Nest Campus Store. You will also receive information regarding summer school, math placement testing, book sales and tablet training.

5:00 p.m.: Bookstore opens (Get your SM spirit wear!)

6:00 p.m.: Check-in and reception. Enjoy small bites and treats! For those interested in our award-winning Model United Nations program, there will be a short presentation in the Science Lecture Hall on campus. More information on MUN can be found in the elective brochure below.
 

7:00 p.m.: Presentation in the Moiso Family Pavilion (Gym).

All incoming students, transfer students and international students are assigned to a school (academic/social-emotional) counselor at Scheduling Night that will provide support throughout the student's four years. The second semester of their junior year, students acquire an additional college counselor who walks them step-by-step through the entire college application process.

Every student must go through our mandatory tablet training with various dates offered throughout the summer to accommodate schedules. Click here to visit the Educational Technology webpage. Santa Margarita Catholic High School uses eCampus as our official textbook provider.

When you log-in to purchase your books during the summer, you will see your student's class list. Your students finalized schedule with teacher assignments and periods will be distributed to students prior to the first day of school. New students will do a trial run to find their classes on campus during SOARientation in August.

The Talon Academy of Performing Arts is offering two conservatory programs over the summer.

TAPA Theatre Summer Conservatory

TAPA Theatre Summer Conservatory course will introduce the performer to all three aspects of live theatre in the form of songs, monologues, scenes and production numbers.

July 10 – July 27, Monday through Thursday

Freshman Prep is open to incoming freshman students who are looking to strengthen their Language Arts (English), Algebra, or Executive Function skills prior to beginning their freshman year.

Students can take one, two or three classes.  Cost is dependent on number of classes taken ($250, $450, $650).  

Due to differences in curriculum, students who are taking English 1 H, Algebra 1 H, Algebra 2, or Algebra 2 H cannot participate in the Language Arts or Algebra Skills courses.

Students taking Model United Nations (MUN) can satisfy the mandatory health requirement by taking health online during summer school prior to graduation or as a semester elective before graduating from SMCHS. There are two summer school sessions for health this summer to choose from. 

MUN Bootcamp

Incoming freshmen who choose to take MUN can also get a jump start on the school year by enrolling in the optional MUN summer Bootcamp.

SMCHS ninth grade students will be automatically placed in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 honors. Placement into Algebra 1 honors is based on HSPT scores.

The math placement test is required for any student who has already taken a full year of Algebra 1 and is looking to advance to Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 honors. Students are required to sign-up for one of the below dates. Students who have completed Algebra 2 or higher in middle school seeking higher level placement will be placed on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Math Department Chair Marty Gahan to discuss specifics. 

A link to sign-up will be emailed to families after scheduling night. Please do not wait to sign up. Spots fill up quickly, and we will not be offering any other dates at this time.

Students should bring their assigned computer username and password with them to the placement test. These credentials will be distributed at Freshman Scheduling Night. If you don't have your credentials with you, your test proctor will assist you. Students do not need to bring any other supplies with them to the exam. See below for practice exams.

This English honors placement test is only open to students who did not take their HSPT exam at SMCHS and want to test into honors. More information will be shared at Scheduling Night. There is no need to sign-up in advance, simply show up the day of the test.

Our Spanish Placement test is open to anyone who wishes to be placed in Spanish honors or a higher level of Spanish class.  It will consist of two parts, a written test and an oral exam. More information will be shared at Scheduling Night. There is no need to sign-up in advance, simply show up the day of the test.

Students with advanced language proficiency in a language other than Spanish may be tested for placement into higher levels. Please make arrangements with Department Chair Tom Gerlach in advance.

Thank you so much for your interest in Performing Arts.  Most of our entry level classes do not require an audition.  Please see each discipline for details regarding auditions/placement in advanced classes. 

Instrumental Music:

• No auditions are required for students interested in Classical Guitar Ensemble (Eagle Rock Band), Wine Ensemble or String Orchestra. 
• Auditions will be available for Wind Ensemble Honors, String Orchestra Honors, and Classical Guitar Ensemble 2 (Eagle Rock Band).

Eagle Regiment Marching Band and Color Guard:

Theatre:

• Theatre classes are offered after school as part of the Talon Academy of Performing Arts (TAPA). There are three tracks: Acting, Triple Threat Musical Theatre, and Technical Theatre and Design. Please refer to the TAPA requirements. Auditions for the 2023-24 Talon Theatre season productions will be available on the Talon Theatre website.

• There are no auditions for incoming freshmen interested in Beginning Dance Class.

• Tryout Information Night for the EDF Song & Dance teams is April 4 at 5:30p.m. in the Science Lecture Hall.
• EDF song and dance team audition clinics will be held on April 25 and April 26 form 3:30.- 5:30p.m.  Applications will be posted on the song team webpage and the dance team webpage. The audition fee is $30.00. Applications and fee are due on or before April 21. 
• EDF song and dance team auditions will be held on April 27 from 3:00-6:30 p.m. in the Dance Room (R313) on the third floor of the Eagle Athletic Center.

Choral Auditions:  

• There are no auditions for incoming freshmen interested in Concert Choir or Men’s Choir.

TAPA Triple-Threat Musical Theatre Auditions:

• Incoming freshmen interested in enrolling in the Triple-Threat Musical Theatre track of TAPA for 2023-24 are required to audition.  Auditions will be held May 24, from 3:30-6:30 p.m. in the Talon Dome.  For more information, or to sign up for an audition, please see the TAPA website at www.smhs.org/tapa.

What is SOARientation?

We are excited to share a fun schedule of events for our new students, affectionately referred to as SOARientation. This event is for our incoming freshmen and transfer students.  SOARientation gets you ready to start your life as an Eagle! SOARientation includes several fun and engaging activities, dynamic presentations, and small group discussions that give new students the opportunity to connect with their new classmates and learn everything they need to know about SMCHS. Not only will students make new friends and form lasting connections, they will start school with an abundance of knowledge and resources that will enable them to successfully begin the school year! Stay tuned for additional information.

Dress code: Any SMCHS T-shirt with appropriate non-uniform bottoms with at least a 6" inseam. Yoga pant/leggings/jeggings may only be worn with a shirt length that reaches your thumb when arms are extended down on your side. Footwear must be closed toe/closed heel. No hats allowed.

Lunch will be provided.

• Monday - Friday: 7:30 A.M - 3:00 P.M when school is in session.
• On minimum days, the store closes one hour after school ends. 

Appointments are needed for uniform fittings due to availability of dressing rooms and to avoid long wait times. A sign-up form will be sent in April with a link for families to schedule their appointments over the summer. Uniforms must be purchased through the SMCHS campus store in person.

• Access to Aeries, our student information system, will be emailed to students and parents the first week of school in August. If you ever forget your Aeries password, just enter your email, then click the Forgot Password link.
• For assistance with any other Aeries account issues, click here.
• Students and parents who wish to monitor academic progress can access Aeries, the official school grading program that allows parents and students to review current graded assignments and test scores online from any computer. In addition, Aeries allows parents and students to review the official school records for discipline, attendance, and grades at set grading periods. Aeries can be accessed here.  

Freshman and sophomore students attend organized events with their religion classes to complete the necessary hours of service. Juniors and senior students work with an organization outside of SM to complete the required number of hours to meet graduation requirements. Learn more about Christian Service at SMCHS.

Eagle Dance Force Song & Dance Teams:

• The Eagle Dance Force Song and Dance teams will hold a workshop on March 14 from 3:30pm - 5:30 p.m. in the Dance Room (R313). The workshop is for intermediate and advanced dancers interested in trying out for either the song or dance teams. Please use following SimpleTix link to register.
